Beauty products make me feel like a kid again. The fact that I spend money every year so I can paint my face is a jarring notion, but it’s true. Many of us do it and it’s because it helps make us feel great about ourselves (not that we need it though because beauty inside is deeper than beauty outside, am I right?). But putting on makeup can be therapeutic for those of us who like to splurge a little bit (or a lot) on beauty.
I will admit that my makeup collection is very tiny. Therefore, there’s nothing special in my collection. I wear simple makeup. I don’t buy multiples of things (except for lipsticks) and I don’t buy something new until what I have runs out. Therefore, I’m not testing out a variety of different things on a monthly basis and can’t give you an opinion on some popular brands. On that note, let’s get into the beauty products that dominated 2019.
My most used primer for 2019 was the Nyx pore filler primer. I’ve used a few other primers – Smashbox photo finish foundation primer, Benefit Cosmetics the porefressional face primer, and Hourglass veil mineral primer. But I haven’t found one that “sparks joy.” The Nyx primer is relatively affordable and does an okay job of filling in my pores and making my face appear smoother. The only con is that it comes out from the tube in small, weird chunks instead of coming out of the tube smoothly. Otherwise, it’s a good primer but one that I’m not planning to replace in 2020.
For my face, I like to wear coverage that leaves me with a natural-looking finish (regardless if my acne scars show through). Wearing a light coverage definitely makes a difference in making my skin appear brighter. It Cosmetic’s CC+ cream is the most natural coverage I’ve ever tried. I use a tiny bit amount on my face using either a buffing brush or a beautyblender. Afterward, I use the finishing powder from RCMA.
My go-to bronzer for years is the Nars Laguna bronzing powder that I’ve been using for six years. If I stray away from this bronzer, it’s only because I’m using the Chanel bronzing makeup base, another product that I’ve used for years. The Laguna bronzer gives you a nice natural tan. I’ve tried other bronzers but always go back to that one.
Blush is something that I think is worth experimenting with because you can’t go wrong with a slight coral, red, or blush colored cheek. Nars blush in orgasm is the perfect color. I use it as an eyeshadow as well. I always get compliments when I use it on both my cheeks and eyelids because it’s a pretty, corally pink color that makes your cheeks and eyes pop. I also have the liquid blush in orgasm and use it when I want a more natural flush. A little goes a long way. However, the packing for the liquid blush is terrible. I’d repurchase it if they made a pump bottle instead.
For the eyes, I use the Pixi silk waterproof pencil eyeliner. It does transfer to my lower lid if I’m not careful with putting a very thin line on my top lids. Afterwards, I use the Loreal telescopic carbon black mascara. This mascara doesn’t flake or transfer. It lengthens without giving me spider eyelashes. It’s my favorite drugstore mascara so far.
I use the Anastasia Beverly Hills eyebrow definer in ebony. I went into Sephora one day and asked the sales lady which eyebrow product she recommended. She asked me back how long I wanted to take doing my eyebrows and I said 5 minutes top. She recommended this one and it literally does take me no longer than 5 minutes. It has a flat side for quickly filling in the eyebrow and a sharper point for drawing in hair strokes.
By far, my most used lipstick and FAVORITE lipstick is YSL’s rouge pur couture lipstick in rose dahlia. It’s a perfect soft coral and the lipstick itself is creamy and goes on smoothly. I use it with this lip brush to get the edge of my lips nicely lined.

What sort of beauty am I looking forward to trying in 2020? Beauty that is no fuss and feels right. By feels right, I mean makeup that represents me and makes me feel comfortable. For example, I keep buying red lipstick when I know that 1) it’s not the most reasonable for my lifestyle, 2) I don’t like myself in red lipstick, and 3) it’s so damn tricky to put on. Going forward, I will do my best to not stray from what I know I’m comfortable wearing. No matter how tempting that purple eyeshadow may look on someone, I won’t be speeding in my car towards Sephora to buy it.
I mentioned earlier that I don’t typically buy things unless I run out of what I already own. However, I want to do a beauty overhaul for some of my most used beauty products of 2019. Here are some things I have in mind. All products are from high-end brands, yes, but are things I’ve been wanting to try.
